Wesley Godfrey graduated in 2018 as a Dean's Honored Graduate in Biology. He was recognized for his excellence in research and his thesis, "Myeloid Cells Support Murine T-ALL Growth In Vivo." Today he is enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, with full funding awarded through the NIH's Medical Scientist Training Program.
During his last three years at UT, Wesley conducted research in the lab of Dr. Lauren Ehrlich on the immunology of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). In particular, he worked on identifying myeloid cells (a subset of blood cells) that contribute to tumor production in mouse models of the disease. Wesley contributed as coauthor to five peer-reviewed published articles, in addition to the work he did for his honors thesis. Over two summers, he participated in the National Institutes of Health STEP-UP research internship program. As part of the program, Wesley presented his research at the NIH. In addition, he participated in the Basic and Translational Sciences Retreat of Dell Medical School's Livestrong Cancer Institutes. After presenting his research there, he received the award for Best Undergraduate Poster Presentation.
Outside of the lab, Wesley served as an award-winning Resident Assistant in the student dormitories, a volunteer at the Austin State Supported Living Center and a campus representative for Next Step Test Prep. Wesley held the Marion B. Sewer Distinguished Scholarship for Undergraduates and the Kevin E. Underhill Memorial Endowed Presidential Scholarship, and he received an Honorable Mention for a Goldwater Scholarship.
