The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has elected two professors in the Department of Mathematics to the 2018 Class of SIAM Fellows.
Todd James Arbogast and Luis Angel Caffarelli are among the 28 fellows selected by SIAM this year for their exemplary research in the fields of applied mathematics and computational science, as well as outstanding service to the community. SIAM is an international society of more than 14,000 individual, academic and corporate members from 85 countries.
Arbogast was selected for his contributions to the numerical analysis of partial differential equations, multiscale analysis, and homogenization for flow through porous media. He is a core member of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) and associate director of the UT Austin Center for Subsurface Modeling.
Caffarelli was selected for his work in regularity theory of nonlinear partial differential equations, free boundary problems, fully nonlinear equations, and nonlocal diffusion. He currently holds the Sid W. Richardson Foundation Regents Chair.
Arbogast and Caffarelli will be recognized for their achievements during the SIAM Annual Meeting held from July 9 - 13 in Portland, Oregon.
