Toot Your Own Horn

Toot Your Own Horn

Dear Students,

Almost everyone suffers from feeling like a fraud sometimes. Whether it's sitting in your chemistry class, thinking everyone else knows what's going on, or feeling your work must be 100% perfect or it's not good enough. Everyone feels like they are an imposter at times, but it is important to recognize that you may just be outside of your comfort zone. In fact, recognizing this can be great for personal growth.

It is also important that you recognize all the things that you are doing well. So, this week, I challenge you to find a way to toot your own horn. Take the time to be your own best advocate.

Find one thing you're genuinely proud of. Did you understand a new concept? Did you take care of yourself with 8 hours of sleep every night? Did you ask for help, even though you would have rather finished something on your own? Did you support a friend who was in need? These are all worthy of some self-recognition and celebration.

The last part of the semester can be a lot of work. Focus on the positive, and you can do it. As we often say, you got into UT, you can get out of UT (with a degree).

Best,
Dr. Vanden Bout
