Dear Students,
Congratulations on your hard work this semester and on making it to Thanksgiving break. I hope this email finds you in a relaxed space, with some free time to do something fun and recharge.
In addition to being a time to enjoy a good meal and connect with loved ones, Thanksgiving offers a special opportunity for us scientists and mathematicians: the opportunity to explain what we do to our family and friends. I've been a neuroscientist for more than 20 years, and, still, every Thanksgiving I find myself re-explaining my research to my aunts and uncles. If you're asked to explain what you do, please be patient—both with yourself and your inquisitive loved ones. Explaining our work to non-scientists often takes some practice, but it's one of the most important things we do.
Have a great Thanksgiving, and good luck fielding those science questions!
Best,
Dr. Drew
Joke: Teacher: What is 2n plus 2n? Student: I'm not sure. That sounds 4n to me.
