Telescopes, Flowers, and AI (Oh, My!)

Dear Students,

Last week was a special week for CNS and UT: in case you missed it, there were a lot of events, including a huge concert, to mark the launch of UT's capital campaign. Attending the events reminded me how lucky I am to work in a college and university with many amazing people and opportunities. Here are few of the cool things I heard about:

  1. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is now part of our CNS community, providing new opportunities for CNS students and faculty in research, outreach and education in the areas of botany, conservation, sustainability and more.
  2. UT Austin is a founding partner of the Giant Magellan Telescope, currently being built in Chile, which will eventually give us the sharpest and most detailed images ever taken of our universe — ten times greater than the famed Hubble Space Telescope.
  3. CNS is home to the UT Machine Learning Laboratory, a world leader in artificial intelligence research. The MLL has partnered with companies like Google, Dell and Netflix, and is working with Dell Medical School to advance medical imaging diagnostics.

Good luck finishing out this final week before spring break. I hope you'll have some time to relax next week and then return to campus refreshed and ready to explore (and contribute to) some of the amazing projects happening here in CNS.

Best,

Dr. Drew
