Research, Travel & Work (Oh My!)

Dear Students,

I know we're in week two of the semester, and summer still seems far off, but it's a great time to start making plans. A few summer options to put on your radar:

1. Gain experience this summer in scientific research. With the vast amount of research happening here in CNS, there are many opportunities on campus. But I encourage you to also explore opportunities beyond our campus. The CNS Office of Experiential Learning can help you find opportunities here at UT Austin and around the world. I highly recommend checking out the Research Opportunities for Undergraduates (REUs) sponsored by the National Science Foundation. There are REUs on campuses all over the U.S., in many scientific disciplines. Each REU hosts about 10 undergraduates, who work closely with faculty and other researchers on a specific research project. Students receive a stipend and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. REU applications usually come due in February, so don't wait!
2. Explore the world this summer. As a CNS student, you have opportunities to go abroad and take courses, do medical shadowing, intern with a foreign company or do research in another country. Students who've done it (myself included) often cite studying abroad as one of their most memorable and meaningful educational experiences. Our CNS International Study Office and Texas Global can help you find opportunities and navigate the process.
3. Start a job or do an internship this summer. Here, too, CNS has got you covered. Whether this is your first semester in CNS or your last, now is a good time to connect with CNS Career Services and explore career and internship opportunities, work on your resume or meet with a career coach.
