Dear Students,
As I write this email, we are still in the throes of the ice storm that halted classes and most of everything else in Austin. Many people remain without power, and ice and fallen tree branches make driving—and even walking—dangerous. By the time you read this, I hope power is back on and cleanup is well underway. If the storm continues to disrupt your studies, know that a variety of resources are available.Speaking of resources, this week I'd like to draw your attention to one of the most important resources on our campus: your academic advisor. You probably already know that advisors are heroes when it comes to solving problems at registration time. And, for that reason, advisors are absolutely slammed with appointments every semester during registration. But advisors also have a great deal to offer outside of registration time, such as:
- Course Selection: Your academic advisor can help you plan in advance and choose courses that align with your academic and career goals.
- Degree Requirements: Your advisor can help you understand the requirements for your major, including core courses, electives and other graduation requirements.
- Career Planning: Several types of advisors in the college (academic, Career Services and Health Professions) can provide information on career paths related to your major and connect you with career and internship resources.
- Problem Solving: The college also has advisors, academic and non-academic, who can help when academic and personal challenges arise.
