Dean Paul Goldbart alerted faculty and staff in neuroscience and college leaders about a transition in the chair's office in the Department of Neuroscience
As many of you know, Michael Mauk informed me that, at the end of the academic year, he will step down as chair of the Department of Neuroscience, returning his full attention to his research and teaching. I greatly appreciate Mike, who has been a stalwart partner and innovative champion for neuroscience research and education. Among many thanks, he had the inspirational notion to launch and nurture the growth of the award-winning UT Brainstorms outreach program. Members of the Austin community have expressed a great deal of enthusiasm for the program and opportunity to connect with researchers in lively discussions about the brain.
I am grateful that excellent candidates came forward for consideration as Mike's successor. I am pleased to announce that Bob Messing, professor of neuroscience, neurology and pharmacology and toxicology, has agreed to serve as the next chair. Bob brings extensive experience in leadership, including as director of our own Waggoner Center for Alcoholism and Addiction Research for the last three years. He previously served in leadership positions at the medical school at the University of California, San Francisco and here at UT where he was Vice Provost for Biomedical Sciences, helping to launch the Dell Medical School. Bob understands and welcomes what will be a new opportunity in academic leadership, where he will work in close partnership with faculty to shape the future of UT neuroscience. He also will continue to serve as Waggoner Center director and, as a jointly appointed faculty member, support strengthening the department's and college's ties with the Dell Med community.
