You are CNS

Dear Students,

We are a ways into the semester and it is a good time to check on where you are standing. Some of you may be cruising along. Others might have run into some difficulties. It is important to remember that there are a whole host of folks here who are ready to help you: from academic advisors to faculty, graduate teaching assistants to peer mentors, and even fellow students. The College of Natural Sciences is a community that is here to support you.

This community is not some nebulous group off in the distance. It is you. I was reminded of this a few weeks ago by a quote from John William Mallett, professor of physics and chemistry and the Chairman of the Faculty when the University opened in 1883. He told that small first class of students, "You frequently hear the phrase used, coming to the university, not remembering that you are the university." Similarly, you are the College of Natural Sciences. Here in CNS, we are a community of over 11,000 students, 700 faculty, and 2,000 staff. Take advantage of that. We are all stronger together.

Best,

Dr. Vanden Bout
