UTeach Replicated at Six More Universities

The UTeach program is being newly replicated at six universities, bringing the total number of UTeach programs in the United States to 20.

AUSTIN, Texas—The UTeach program at The University of Texas at Austin is being newly replicated at six universities, bringing the total number of UTeach programs in the United States to 20, including the founding program.

The University of Tennessee Knoxville, Middle Tennessee State University, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Tyler and Cleveland State University will be initiating UTeach programs.

Universities now implementing UTeach include:

Some of the first UTeach replication sites have already begun producing graduates. University of Houston’s teachHouston and the University of Kansas’ UKanTeach graduated students in Spring 2009.

The University of Texas at Austin UTeach program, which began in 1997, has produced close to 550 graduates, 90 percent of whom enter the teaching field. UTeach’s record of success – 80 percent of teachers are still teaching after five years – has brought the program national recognition as an effective solution to the disturbing shortage of qualified math and science teachers in Texas and the United States.

Projections indicate that, by 2016, UTeach-like programs around the country will have produced an estimated 7,000 new math and science teachers, and those teachers will have affected more than one million students by 2017 and more than 20 million during the course of the new teachers’ careers.

Grants and support to replicate the program come from The University of Texas at Austin's UTeach Institute, the Texas High School Project, the Greater Texas Foundation, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and Department of Education, and the Dallas-based National Math and Science Initiative.
