The world's largest society of professional ecologists will recognize Eric Pianka with its top award for achievement in the field.
The Ecological Society of America will hold its 100th annual meeting in August and present Pianka with its Eminent Ecologist Award.
A professor in the Department of Integrative Biology since 1968, Pianka is the Denton A. Cooley Centennial Professor of Zoology at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a distinguished scientist in the Texas Academy of Science. His specialty, the evolutionary ecology of lizards, led to his being featured in a PBS "NOVA" documentary called "Lizard Kings."
According to the Ecological Society of America:
The Eminent Ecologist Award is given to a senior ecologist in recognition of an outstanding body of ecological work or sustained ecological contributions of extraordinary merit. During his 50-year academic career, Pianka… published nearly 200 scientific papers, several of which became "Citation Classics." His textbook "Evolutionary Ecology," first published in 1974, went through six editions and has been translated into multiple languages. Pianka's key and durable contributions to empirical ecology encompass wide‐ranging studies of lizard community ecology across many continents and the discovery of many new lizard species. … All of his conceptual contributions are grounded in a thorough understanding of natural history with a deep love of the natural world. His work has influenced many individuals, both inside the ecological profession and beyond.

Thanks a LOT
Eric
Congratulations Dr Eric Pianka!!! I work in the Guarino's Lab, and your articles are a great ispiration to me. I hope someday to meet you in person.
Hooray and congratulations Eric! Should make for an exciting ESA this year!
It's a good new but why not 20 years ago minimally? There is not many ecologists who deserves this award to such extent and for so long time. The Prof. Pianka's classical textbook and some papers are number one in my own rating list since 1980-90s... And by the way I never visited USA (it's concerning world fame)
Eric, your work greatly influenced me and countless others. Very well deserved award and I am so happy for you.
Congratulations Eric! Proud to have been your student!
Congratulations Eric! I hope to be at ESA when you accept the award. Very happy for you and your achievements. I guess i still owe you my particiption in your Evolutionary Ecology course! But I thank you nonetheless for serving as my advisor.
I will join Dr. Pantoja in remarking upon your far-reaching greatness. Magnificently done! Magnificently still-doing. I remain your fan.

Congratulations on this well deserved recognition of your work. And, I'd like to add that you are also a wonderful writer! (A gift not all scientists hold!)
Congratulations! I am happy for you!
Your work has motivated many reptile keepers including myself as a Varanus owner to turn toward careers in animal care, research, and more importantly conservation, congratulations and thank you for your all of your contributions!
Eric: I am pleased that you got this well-deserved recognition. You understand biological diversity like few others. Sadly, desert rats like you are not likely replaced in the halls of academia!
Best, Larry
Proud to be a professor in Eric Pianka's department at the University of Texas at Austin. Many contributions to science for his research and the education of many students. You are an inspiration and role model for many of us.
All the best, Robin
I am so happy for you!
Congrats Eric,
Your work was inspirational to me when I was a wee lad (okay, not that long ago actually).
all the best, Mathew
Congratulations! Enjoy
