The University of Texas at Austin ranked No. 25 in the world among academic institutions for publication of scientific research, according to the latest annual report from the Nature Index, and it ranked 7th among U.S. universities in chemistry.
UT Austin ranked No. 16 among all U.S. universities—and No. 7 among U.S. public universities—in publication of scientific research. The Nature Index also evaluates productivity of the top global institutions in four specialty subject areas, including chemistry, environmental sciences and physical sciences.
For chemistry, it ranked 18th worldwide (No. 7 among U.S. universities). In physical sciences, it ranked 24th worldwide and 14th among U.S. universities. It ranked 10th worldwide in Earth and Environmental Sciences (No. 8 among U.S. universities).
"These objective measures of UT Austin faculty's research productivity and impact demonstrate longstanding strength in the sciences," said President Gregory L. Fenves. "Our scientific leadership helps us educate innovators and deliver tremendous value as a public research university."
The Nature Index tabulates author affiliations for about 60,000 scientific articles published per year in 68 elite natural science journals identified through an independent survey of researchers and scientific experts. The list of journals includes prestigious publications in chemistry, life sciences, physical sciences and earth and environmental sciences, including Science and Nature. Editors counted the number of times each institution's authors appeared in the journals, adjusting fractionally for co-authorship.
