The trees will be moved during winter break to make way for demolition and construction of the new ESB. Demolition of the building will begin sometime in early 2008, said Dr. Peter Riley, associate dean for research and facilities.
Jim Shackelford, project manager with the University of Texas System Office of Facilities Planning and Construction, said several of the trees will move to temporary locations near Patterson and will move back after the completion of the new building. Several others will be relocated to new permanent places on campus.
Faculty and staff have been moving out of ESB since late spring, and this will continue until early 2008. ESB is still currently being used for some administrative offices and teaching labs.
When the state-of-the-art ESB opened in 1952, it was one of the largest research buildings in the United States. Known first simply as the “Science Building,” it was also one of the first air-conditioned buildings on campus. Over the past 50 years, the building has played host to bacteriology, biochemistry, genetics, zoology, microbiology, and much more.
