Leap Day

Leap Day

Dear Students,

Feeling a little off this week?

Perhaps it is because today is Leap Day (2/29). And while it comes around every four years, it somehow feels like a rare occasion. So, perhaps that has thrown you off this week.

Or perhaps it is the fact that we are now well into the semester and the weight of assignments, labs, readings, and exams is starting to wear you down. So, this week is great week to reset and make sure you are taking care of yourself.

To be at your best you need to not only put time and energy into your coursework. You also need to put time and energy into yourself. Sleep. Eat. And give yourself permission to take time to do activities that fill you up when you are feeling run down. Visit with a friend. Exercise. Read a book. Watch a movie (note: this does not mean binge watch all 217 episodes of Dynasty to get insight into what the 80s were really like). In short, do something you really enjoy.

Looking for help and ideas on how to get a break from stress? Check out the Thrive at UT app from the UT Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC). For that matter you should check out the CMHC webpage. It is full of helpful advice along with information on the wide array of services that they offer to students.

So, don't let Leap Day throw you into a funk. Take a break to reset your week. Better yet, do it every week. That means intentionally planning time to take care of yourself when you are planning time for studying and classes.

Best,

– Dr. Vanden Bout
