Talking Science

Talking Science

Dear Students,

One of the things I enjoy the most about being a scientist is the opportunities I get to present my results and discuss them with colleagues. I especially like going to smaller workshops where large amounts of time are dedicated to discussion and debate. Discussing the result from other labs gives me new ideas, insights, and inspirations. In presenting my own work I am forced to address critical questions that might not come up without the new perspective of other researchers.

Part of becoming a scientist is learning how to communicate your results. Yet undergraduates don't often have opportunities to give public presentations. Fortunately, this is not the case in the College of Natural Sciences. Each year we organize the College of Natural Sciences Undergraduate Research Forum. This year it will take place on Friday, April 15, 2016 in the Texas Union Ballroom.

To participate in the forum students need to register by February 29. If you are considering participating as an individual or part of a team, please fill out this short form. Abstracts will be due at a later date, but you need to register by 2/29/16 if you'd like to participate. All the details can be found on the Undergraduate Research Forum Student Participant page.

If you have participated in a research project, I hope that you all take the opportunity to share your results with the rest of the college. The research forum is not only a chance to hone your science communication skills, but it is a great opportunity to be part of our broader community of scientists.

Best, – Dr. Vanden Bout

P.S. I wanted to let everyone know the Natural Sciences Council will be hosting the first talk in a new series of Curriculum Conversations with a focus on Minors in CNS. They are looking for any students interested in joining with faculty to talk about this issue on Monday 2/22 from 5-6pm in the Union Quadrangle Room. More information can be found at Curriculum Conversations: Minors in CNS. If you are interested, RSVP so we know how much food to get.
