In a message to Longhorn Nation, President Fenves announced a new effort to support University of Texas at Austin students in the aftermath of the outbreak of COVID-19. Here is his message and how you can help.
During the past week, as the impact of COVID-19 has become clear, many of you have reached out to share concern and to offer support for our students who are struggling during these difficult and uncertain times. I am grateful for your kindness and empathy, and many of you have asked how you can help.
The health and safety of our students in this unprecedented crisis is our most important responsibility. Although moving classes online and having students off campus is essential for the public health, it has caused major disruptions in their lives. Many students need emergency support from UT. Many need access to computers and internet connectivity to complete their UT courses. Many have lost wages. Many face the burden of unanticipated moving expenses and are struggling to find alternative housing. And others need airfare to reunite with their families.
Now is the time to pull together as only Longhorns can. If you would like to make a gift to support emergency funding for UT students, you can visit our website and donate today. The President's Office at UT will match all gifts — dollar for dollar — up to the first $2 million given to the university's Student Emergency Fund.
All funds raised will be administered and distributed by the Student Emergency Fund to ensure access across our colleges and schools. A team of 20 caseworkers is dedicated to reviewing student applications for emergency aid so we can provide assistance to those with the greatest need.
This is a unified, campus-wide effort to leverage the strength and generosity of Longhorn Nation to help University of Texas students and keep them on track to complete the spring semester. I know that there are many people in need right now. This is one way your generosity can have an immediate impact on UT students.
