Shelley Payne, professor of molecular genetics and microbiology in the College of Natural Sciences, will be joining the dean’s office as the new associate dean for faculty affairs.
As associate dean, she will be responsible for faculty promotion and tenure, recruiting and retention, annual faculty reports and faculty development.
“All of these activities are absolutely critical for the future success of our college,” said Linda Hicke, dean of the college. “A strong faculty makes a strong college. Shelley cares passionately about both research and teaching. She has a long record of conscientious service to our university, and has been an advocate for the development of junior faculty and promoting diversity and equity in the College of Natural Sciences. She will be a great example and inspiration for our junior faculty.”
Payne is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor, a recipient of the 2007 Civitatis Award and recipient of a 2009 Regents’ Teaching Award. She served as chairman of the Department of Microbiology from 1993-1997, served on the college’s promotion and tenure committee, serves on several NIH working groups, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.
Her research focuses on the genetics and regulation of iron acquisition systems and other virulence factors of the intestinal pathogens Shigella and Vibrio.
She has supervised more than 25 graduate students, authored more than 100 journal articles, and is currently an undergraduate advisor for the Dean’s Scholars Honors program.
