Research

Dear Students,

The University of Texas is what is sometimes called an "R1" University. This means that it is classified as having the highest research activity level. What does this mean for CNS students? UT has amazing opportunities to participate in research. Many students have already undertaken research projects through the Freshman Research Initiative which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. But there are also lots of other opportunities to work in research labs throughout the college. Not only can you take advantage of these opportunities to explore new ideas through research, in most cases independent laboratory research experiences can count toward your degree. Now is the time to try to line something up for next fall.

Students often ask me how they can find a research lab. There is not one simple answer because every lab is different. However, you have a number of great resources to consult. You can ask a professor at office hours. You can check out the Eureka database. You can look at faculty research pages on department websites. You could get involved with student groups like SURGe. Or best of all you could talk to other students who are actively involved in research.

Looking for a place to find them? Look no farther than the Undergraduate Research Forum (URF). The URF will be held next week on Friday April 15th in the Union Ballroom. More than 200 CNS students will present posters on their research, spanning across the disciplines in the college. You can learn some science and talk to students about how they found a research lab all at the same time. That is a win-win. I look forward to seeing you all there next week.

Best, – Dr. Vanden Bout
