Let’s Get This Party Started

Dear Students,

Welcome to the start of a new year in the College of Natural Sciences (CNS)! As most of you know, my name is David Vanden Bout, and I am the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in CNS. I think I have the best job at UT because I get to work with all of you and make sure your time here is the best it can be.

Each week I will send you an email like this one that highlights skills, opportunities, and ideas to expand your horizons. I'll also add a terrible-ly funny science joke because humor is what gets us through. This week I offer some tried and true suggestions for starting the semester off on the right foot:

  1. Treat being a student at UT like a job: Show up, work hard, be respectful, look for new opportunities, and give it your all.
  1. Take advantage of all that is at UT: Cornerstones is here to help you make the most of your four years. Opportunities and support tailored to you are everywhere—just ask. In fact, asking is one of the best skills you can learn, whether it's in the classroom, with your advisor, or directed to another student. Asking shows that you're engaged in the world around you.

So whether you are a first-year freshman or a soon-to-be graduating senior, think of all the amazing things you'll learn and experience this year. Make a list of what you want to accomplish, and do something that works toward those goals every day. Let's make this year the best yet.

Best,
Dr. Vanden Bout
