Kopp's Weekly - The Undergraduate Research Forum

Getting ready for the Undergraduate Research Forum.

Dear Students,

I realize it's already Wednesday and I'm late with this week's email. Better late than never, and there is urgent news at the end of this email.

The 2012 College of Natural Sciences Undergraduate Research Forum will be held Friday, April 13, 2012 in Welch Hall and I am inviting all of you to participate. This is the biggest celebration of research, curiosity, and discovery in our college. The poster session has grown every year and you can be a part of it. Get involved; it's amazing. The first information session is this Friday (see below).

WHO: All CNS undergraduate students who have participated in research. Research can have been done with CNS faculty, faculty at other institutions (e.g. summer REU participants), scientists at national labs or companies. Even if you haven't started, you can present a poster with a carefully laid-out research plan describing the problem and proposed methods, etc.

WHAT: Poster session running most of the day with judges interviewing presenters and scoring projects. The event will feature poster oral presentations by our top student researchers. Thanks to corporate and private donors, there will be numerous cash awards for research and presentation excellence. Judges will come from the UT faculty and Austin business community.

HOW: If you would like to participate, here are some deadlines you should know:

    • Intent to Submit an Abstract - 2/17/12 done online here. If you are considering participating please fill out this short form as it will give us an idea of the size of the event.

  • Abstract Submission - due 3/19/12.

Also, to assist you with preparation for the Forum, SURGE is sponsoring a series of workshops (with food) you can attend to find out more information and learn how to prepare and present a poster. Those sessions are:

    • Why present at the Undergraduate Research Forum? (Co-sponsored by SURGe) Fri, 1/27/12, 4-6 pm, Painter 3.02 (Free pizza) Faculty members share their perspective on the importance of scientific communication, including posters and students who have presented posters share their experience, advice and perspective.

    • Writing Workshops (February and March) (Writing the Content for & Presenting Your Poster)We will repeatedly host a workshop designed to help you convert your research into scientific communication, help you practice and prepare to talk with others about your research at the Forum. Attendance at one of these will get you on your way! All of the writing workshops will present the same information. Times and Dates TBA

  • Output Workshop (Co-sponsored by SURGe) Tue 4/3/12, 3:30-6:30 pm, PAI 4.18. SURGe members and OHRIS staff will help students finalize their posters and prepare to print their posters.

For more information, questions or comments, please contact Assistant Dean Sarah Simmons, Office for Honors, Research and International Studies, College of Natural Sciences (232-9029, s.l.simmons@mail.utexas.edu). The first workshop is this Friday!
