Mary Long was there when UTeach was born in 1997. In fact, she helped create the science and math teacher preparation program from scratch and was UTeach’s first Master Teacher. Since then, she and others have worked hard to make the program the success it is today, with more than 500 graduates and growing.
Long retired recently, but her support of the UTeach program continues with a $25,000 endowment gift that takes advantage of a one-to-one matching program for new UTeach endowments set up by the KLE Foundation.
“The foundation’s match is what made this especially appealing to me,” says Long (M.S. ’68). “It’s making the money I invested go twice as far.”
Long’s gift will contribute to the greater UTeach endowment, from which the funds are critical for several key components of the program. The endowment supports student internships and mentor teachers in area secondary schools. It also covers tuition costs for students taking their first two teaching courses and provides professional support for UTeach graduates during their first years of teaching.
“This is the kind of gift that has a major multiplying effect,” says Long. “Helping a program that is producing better science and math teachers brings benefit to the state, the country, and the university. UTeach will result in students who are better prepared in science and math coming to the university, and better graduates going out into the world. I can’t think of anything more important than supporting this program.”
