Dear CNS Students,
As we head into Thanksgiving, I've been thinking about gratitude and, in particular, a quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer: "In normal life we hardly realize how much more we receive than we give, and life cannot be rich without such gratitude. It is so easy to overestimate the importance of our own achievements compared with what we owe to the help of others."
As a result, I'm reflecting this week not just on what I'm thankful for but who I'm thankful for. There are many people who have helped me in ways both big and small. They are people from my past and people who are part of my daily life now. They are older mentors from whom I have sought advice, and they are students like you, who are teaching me things every day.
I've found reflecting on all these people does indeed make life rich. So this week, maybe do a bit of reflecting on your own, or even send a note of gratitude to someone important to you. What better way of saying thanks than letting those who have helped to shape the person you are today know it?
Best,
Dr. Vanden Bout
