For 32 years, Frank Gerth III, gave all that he had to his students and colleagues as a mathematics professor. And though Professor Gerth is no longer of this world, he hasn’t stopped giving. Gerth, who passed away in May 2006, established excellence funds for mathematics graduate students and fellowships for faculty through his estate.
Characterized by his colleagues as warm, dependable and generous, Gerth began his career at the university in 1974. During his tenure, he taught 16 different math courses, and was honored repeatedly for his strong teaching. An internationally respected mathematician, he also found time to provide extensive service to the department and mathematical community.
Graduate students will benefit from both the “Frank Gerth III Graduate Excellence Awards,” created for students who’ve demonstrated outstanding performance in their work, and “Frank Gerth III Teaching Excellence Awards,” given each semester to students who are proven teaching assistants or assistant instructors. “Frank E. Gerth III Faculty Fellowships” will be awarded to math professors for excellence in teaching or research.
“Frank’s gift to the college will provide the funding needed to attract the highest caliber faculty and enhance the educational experience of our graduate students,” said Dean Mary Ann Rankin. “We are very grateful for his gift.”
