Flipped Classes, Teaching and Learning‏

Flipped Classes, Teaching and Learning‏

Your college wants to hear from you.

Dear Students,

This week I'd like to initiate a conversation with you about teaching and learning. Students sometimes say "I wish Professor ____ would tell us what we need to know." Entwined in this are several themes. Expectations for a course need to be clear. Students need to know what are interesting applications and what are core principles. A balance must be struck between content/facts that have to be known versus problem-solving skills that have to be learned.

Now comes the teaching practice called "flipping the classroom," which is described at this link. Many of you are enrolled in flipped classes now. Let's come together for a conversation, sponsored by the Natural Sciences Council:

Town Hall on Flipped Classrooms
Monday, November 18, 5pm
WELCH 1.308
(pizza will be served)

This is an opportunity to share insights on what works, what can improve, and what contributes to the learning environment of the college. It's an opportunity to share your input and hear perspectives of others.

I hope you can make it, we want to hear from you.

-- Dr. Kopp

PS: Each week we try to let you know of the week's events, scholarship opportunities, lectures, etc. Check out the full week's line-up at this link.

PPS: College of Natural Sciences Externship Program (January 7th, 8th, & 9th, 2014): This program is an opportunity for students to visit an employer in Texas for one day during winter break in January 2014. You will have an opportunity to shadow an executive, get real world experience and exposure to what professionals in their field do on a daily basis, and gain insight into the professional work environment. Currently there are over 30 companies in the Texas area who will be participating in this event! You will be required to provide your own transportation to the externship site.

Registration will begin this week. If you've already registered with Science Works, you will receive an email from the Career Design Center when registration opens, or you can check the events page of the Career Design Center. Registration will be completed via ScienceWorks on a first-come, first-served basis. Here is an opportunity, in an era when you hear about the difficulty in gaining real exposure to careers, job shadowing, and mentorship, to have an up-close exposure to executives and leaders in their field.
