Computer Science Camp is Geared to Girls

Free, weeklong camp in the Department of Computer Science showcases the potential of a rewarding career in technology to selected Texas high school girls.

Event: First Bytes, An Innovative Summer Program in Computer Science to Promote Interest in Technology in Teenage Girls

When: June 17–22, various times

Where: Various locations on The University of Texas at Austin campus (see below for details) and across Austin

Background: This is the 10th annual First Bytes Summer Camp at The University of Texas at Austin sponsored by the Department of Computer Science. The free, weeklong camp showcases the potential of a rewarding career in technology to selected Texas high school girls.

During the past two years, 18 women who attended a First Bytes camp as high schoolers enrolled as freshmen in the Department of Computer Science.

Campers work together on programming language labs and logic games, see surgical robots in action, meet professional computer scientists, get career mentoring, play games, enjoy campus life and get a taste of what it’s like to have a fascinating, well-paying job.

Sponsors of First Bytes include Cisco Systems, Google, Lockheed Martin, the Texas Film Commission, the Texas Workforce Commission and VMware.
