Chemist Receives Young Investigator Award

Livia Schiavinato Eberlin, an assistant professor of chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin, has been chosen to receive the 2020 Eli Lilly Young Investigator Award in Analytical Chemistry. Given by Eli Lilly's Analytical Chemistry Academic Contacts Committee, the award recognizes her exceptional research and publication record, as well as her impact on the field of analytical chemistry.

Eberlin's most visible work has been the development of the MasSpec Pen, "a powerful tool that rapidly and accurately identifies cancerous tissue during surgery, delivering results in about 10 seconds." The scientist's ground-breaking research has previously earned her many other prestigious awards. She is the winner of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, a Moore Inventor Fellowship and UT Austin's Emerging Inventor of the Year Award.

"The MasSpec Pen technology developed by Livia and her team is already starting to transform the success of cancer surgeries," said Jennifer Brodbelt, chair of the Department of Chemistry. "Livia is also pioneering mass spectrometry imaging methods for other problems related to clinical diagnostics."

The Eli Lilly award includes an unrestricted $50,000 grant that is renewable for a second year.
