Teaching Statement Workshop with Dr. Julie Sievers
Tuesday, July 18, 2017, 11:45am - 01:15pm

Dr. Julie Sievers is the Director for Teaching, Learning and Scholarship at Southwestern University (Georgetown, TX). She will provide a Teaching Statement Workshop for CNS graduate students and postdocs on Tuesday, July 18, from 11:45-1:15. Please RSVP here to indicate your intention to attend - information provided here will help Dr. Sievers tailor the workshop to those in attendance. Here is a description of the workshop:

"The teaching philosophy statement is ubiquitous across higher education. It is often a required component of job applications, evaluation materials, and teaching award reviews. In these short essays, faculty and graduate students try to articulate who they are and what they do as teachers. To condense this complex work into a few pages of readable prose is a difficult trick. Yet the best statements convey not only abstract “philosophies” but also uncover how teachers in a diversity of settings approach teaching and learning.

In this session, participants will gain strategies and tools for writing an effective statement.  We will consider the key components that teaching statements should include and rhetorical contexts to address. We will learn effective strategies for making a statement stand out, and how to evaluate a statement’s effectiveness.  We will review example statements, and discuss what works and doesn’t.  Finally, participants will gain ideas for how to start the writing process.“

Please note the expanded time frame for this workshop. Pizza and drinks will be served, as usual.
