Academic Career Workshop

CNS Grad Students and Postdocs,

We will continue our tradition of using our summer grad student/postdoc professional development seminars to focus on academic careers and the academic job search. Here's the schedule for the Academic Career Workshop on Tuesday, July 19th, from noon-2pm:

12:00-12:45pm - Opening session with Dr. Sarah Eddy. Sarah is involved in STEM higher education/active learning research, and is currently a research analyst in the Texas Institute for Discovery Education in Science. She will be starting a faculty position at Florida International University this fall. Sarah will discuss discipline-based education research, and will share advice for prospective faculty members for developing effective teaching practices.

~12:45-1:00pm - Introduction of panelists for the “preparation for the job market” session.

1:00-2:00pm - Preparing for the Job Market Panel Discussion - focusing on positions at research institutions. Panelists will include:
Dr. Dana Garcia, Professor of Biology, Texas State University
Dr. Bill Beckner, Professor of Mathematics, UT-Austin
Dr. Carlos Baiz, Assistant Professor, UT-Austin Department of Chemistry
Dr. Jacqui Tabler, current UT-Austin postdoc, will start in a position in the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics this fall.

Panelists will discuss the characteristics of a strong faculty application. Topics for discussion will include the research statement/proposal, the chalk talk, and the interview process.

Pizza and drinks will be provided, starting at noon.
