Research as Art
Wednesday, April 27, 2016, 01:00pm - 02:00pm

Stunning research images and the fascinating stories behind them are coming to the Perry-Castañeda Library in an exhibition of entries for the Research as Art competition, run for the past six years at Swansea University in Wales, a partner institution of The University of Texas at Austin. Subjects include the haunting beauty of the microscopic world, the vibrant colors of Rio de Janeiro, and how 21st century scanning can unwrap a mummified snake.

The Research as Art competition celebrates the diversity and beauty of research. It is the only competition of its kind, with an emphasis on telling the research story, as well as composing a striking image. Research as Art will be coming to Austin having just been displayed at the Royal Institution in London, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious scientific organizations.

Please join us in the PCL Scholars Commons for a talk by competition founder Dr. Richard Johnston, associate professor in materials science at Swansea University. Dr. Johnston will talk about some of the processes researchers use to develop their pieces and some of the resulting impacts. The art pieces will be on display in the Scholars Commons beginning April 27.
