2016 M.E.L. Oakes Lecture: Robophysics — Physics Meets Robotics
Wednesday, April 06, 2016, 04:00pm - 05:00pm

Sidewinder snake2016 M.E.L. Oakes Undergraduate Lecture

"Robophysics: Physics Meets Robotics"

by Professor Daniel I. Goldman
Georgia Tech School of Physics &
Georgia Power Professor of Excellence

Goldman investigates the interaction of biological and physical systems with complex materials like granular media, such as sand. He integrates laboratory experiment, computer simulation, and mathematical and physical (robotic) models to understand the biomechanics of how animals like the sidewinder and sandfish move through these environments.

Goldman received a S.B. in Physics from M.I.T. (1994) and a PhD in Physics from UT Austin, where he received the 2002 Outstanding Dissertation in Physics Award. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and he has received a DARPA Young Faculty Award, an NSF CAREER/PECASE Award, and a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface.
